thou wilt never give me so much torment as this wicked ( [1] ) one deserveth.”
8 ‘Whereupon the sinner, holding to this manner [of penitence], will find the more mercy with God (a) in proportion as he craveth justice.’
9 ‘Assuredly, an abominable sacrilege is laughter of the sinner: insomuch that this world is rightly called by our father David a vale of tears ( [2] ).
10 There was a king adopted as son one of his slaves, whom he made lord of all that he possessed. 11 Now it chanced that by the deceit of a wicked man the wretched one fell under the displeasure of the king, 12 so that he suffered great miseries, not only in his substance, but in being despised, and being deprived of all that he won each day by working. 13 Think ye that such a man would laugh for any time?’
14 ‘ No, assuredly’, answered the disciples, ‘for if the king should have known it he would have caused him to be slain, seeing him laugh at the king’s displeasure. 15 But it is propable that he would weep day and night.’

لا تعذبني كما يستحق هذا الأثيم ( [3] ) 8 فإذا جرى الخاطئ على هذا الأسلوب وجد أن رحمة الله (ا) تزيد على نسبة العدل الذي يطلبه 9 حقا إن ضحك الخاطئ دنس مكروه حتى إنه يصدق على هذا العالم ما قال أبونا داود من أنه وادي الدموع ( [4] )10 كان ملك تبنى أحد عبيده وجعله سيدا على كل ما يملكه 11 فحدث بسعاية ماكر خبيث أن وقع هذا التعيس تحت غضب الملك 12 فأصابه شقاء عظيم لا في مقتنياته فقط بل احتقر وانتزع منه كل ما كان يربحه كل يوم من العمل 13 أتظنون أن مثل هذا الرجل يضحك مرة ما ؟ 14 فأجاب التلاميذ : لا البتة لأنه لو عرف الملك بذلك لأمر بقتله إذ يرى أنه يضحك من غضبه 15 ولكن الأرجح أنه يبكي نهارا وليلا
