12 The weeping of a sinner is a consumption of earthly affection by vehemence of sorrow. 13 Insomuch that just as the sunshine preserveth from putrefaction what is placed uppermost, even so this consumption preserveth the soul from sin. 14 If God (a) should grant tears to the true penitent as many as the sea hath waters he would desire far more: 15 and so this desire consumeth that little drop that he fain would shed, as a blazing furnace consumeth a drop of water. 16 But they who readily burst into weeping are like the horse that goeth the faster the more lightly be is laden.’

1 ‘Verily there are men who have both the inward affection and the outward tears. 2 But he who is thus, will be a Jeremiah ( [1] ). In weeping, God measureth more the sorrow than the tears.’
3 Then said John: ‘O master, how doth man lose in weeping over things other than sin?’
5 Jesus answered: ‘If Herod should give thee

12 إن بكاء الخاطئ هو احتراق هواه العالمي بشدة الأسى 13 وكما أن نور الشمس يقي ما هو موضوع في الأعلى من التعفن هكذا يقي هذا الاحتراق النفس من الخطيئة 14 فلو وهب الله (ا) النادم الصادق دموعا قدر ما في البحر من ماء لتمنى أكثر من ذلك بكثير 15 ويفني هذا التمني تلك القطرة الصغيرة التي يود أن يسكبها كما يفني الأتون الملتهب قطرة من الماء 16 أما الذين يفيضون بكاء بسهولة فكالفرس الذي تزيد سرعة عدوه كلما خف حمله.
الفصل الرابع بعد المائة (ب)
1 إنه ليوجد قوم يجمعون بين الهوى الداخلي والعبرات الخارجية 2 ولكن من على هذه الشاكلة يكون كإرميا ( [2] ) 3 ففي البكاء يزن الله الحزن أكثر مما يزن العبرات 4 فقال حينئذ يوحنا : يا معلم كيف يخسر الإنسان في البكاء على غير الخطيئة ؟ 5 أجاب يسوع : إذا أعطاك هيرودس
