to an extreme fast, in order that he may fall sick and after wards live deliciously. 17 And if he succeed not in this, he will seek to make him set his fast simply upon bodily food, in order that he may be like unto himself, who never eateth but always sinneth.
18 As God liveth (a), it is abominable to deprive the body of food and fill the soul with pride, despising them that fast not, and holding oneself better than they. 19 Tell me, will the sick man boast of the diet that is imposed on him by the physician, and call them mad who are not put on diet ( [1] )? 20 Assuredly not. 21 But he will sorrow for the sickness by reason of which he needs must be put upon diet. 22 Even so I say unto you, that the penitent ought not to boast in his fast, and despise them that fast not; 23 but he ought to sorrow for the sin by reason whereof he fasteth. 24 Nor should the penitent that fasteth procure delicate food, but he should content himself with coarse food. 25 Now will a man give delicate food to the dog that biteth and to the horse that kicketh? 26 No, surely, but rather the contrary. 27 And let this suffice you concerning fasting.’

بالغلو في الصوم حتى ينتابه مرض فيعيش بعد ذلك متنعما 17 فإذا لم يفلح في هذا حاول أن يجعله يقصر صومه على ترك الطعام الجسدي حتى يكون مثله لا يأكل شيئا ولكنه يرتكب الخطيئة على الدوام 18 لعمر الله (ا) إنه لممقوت أن يحرم المرء الجسد من الطعام ويملأ النفس كبرياء محتقرا الذين لا يصومون وحاسبا نفسه أفضل منهم 19 قولوا لي أيفاخر المريض بطعام الحمية الذي فرضه عليه الطبيب ويدعو الذين لا يقتصرون على طعام الحمية مجانين ( [2] )؟ 20 لا البتة 21 بل يحزن للمرض الذي اضطر بسببه إلى الاقتصار على طعام الحمية 22 إنني أقول لكم أنه لا يجب على التائب أن يفاخر بصومه ويحتقر الذين لا يصومون 23 بل يجب عليه أن يحزن للخطيئة التي يصوم لأجلها 24 ولا يجب على التائب الذي يصوم أن يتناول طعاما شهيا بل يقتصر على الطعام الخشن 25 أ فيعطي الإنسان طعاما شهيا للكلب الذي يعض وللفرس الذي يرفس ؟ لا البتة بل الأمر بالعكس 27 وليكن هذا كفاية لكم في شأن الصوم.
