9 Even so I say unto you that ye shall not receive that which ye will not desire. 10 God is able (a)( [1] ), if ye desire holiness, to make you holy in less time than the twinkling of an eye ( [2] ), 10 but in order that man may be sensible of the gift and the giver our God willeth that we should wait and ask.
11 Have ye seen them that practise shooting at a mark? 12 Assuredly they shoot many times in vain. 13 Howbeit, they never wish to shoot in vain, but are always in hope to hit the mark. 14 Now do ye this, ye who ever desire to have our God in remembrance (b), 15 and when ye forget, mourn; for God shall give you grace to attain to all that I have said.
16 ‘Fasting and spiritual watching are so united one with the other that, if one break the watch, straightway the fast is broken. 17 For in sinning a man breaketh the fast of the soul, and forgetteth God.
18 So is it than watching and fasting as regardeth the soul are always necessary for us and for all men. 19 For to none is it lawful to sin (c) .20 but the fasting

كذلك أقول لكم أنكم لا تنالون ما لا تشتهون 9 إن الله لقادر (ا) ( [3] ) إذا اشتهيتم الطهارة أن يجعلكم طاهرين في أقل من طرفة عين ( [4] )10 ولكن إلهنا يريد أن ننظر ونطلب لكي يشعر الإنسان بالهبة والواهب 11 أ رأيتم الذين يتمرنون على رمي هدف ؟ 12 حقا إنهم ليرمون مرارا متعددة عبثا 13 وكيفما كانت الحال فهم لا يرغبون مطلقا ولكنهم يؤملون دوما أن يصيبوا الهدف 14 فافعلوا هكذا أنتم الذين تشتهون دوما أن تذكروا (ب) الله 15 ومتى غفلتم فنوحوا لأن الله سيهبكم نعمة لتبلغوا كل ما قد قلته 16 إن الصوم والسهر الروحي متلازمان حتى إذا أبطل أحد السهر بطل الصوم توا 17 لأن الإنسان بارتكاب الخطيئة يبطل صوم النفس ويغفل عن الله 18 وهكذا فإن السهر والصوم من حيث النفس لازمان دوما لنا لسائر الناس 19 لأنه لا يجوز لأحد أن يخطئ (ج)20 أما الصوم
