and be deprived of earthly goods, in order that he may do good works. 8 Therefore our God waiteth for man to be penitent (a)( [1] ). 9 Verily I say unto you, that our God hath condemned man to work, so that, as said Job( [2] ), the friend and prophet of God: “As the bird is born to fly and the fish to swim, even so is man born to work.”

10 ‘So also David ( [3] ) our father, a prophet of God, saith: “Eating the labours of our hands we shall be blessed, and it shall be well with us (b).”

11 ‘Wherefore let every one work, according to his quality ( [4] ). 12 Now tell me, if David our father and Solomon his son worked with their hands, what ought the sinner to do?’

13 Said John: ‘Master to work is a fitting thing, but this ought the poor to do.’

14 Jesus answered: ‘Yea, for they cannot do otherwise. 15 But knowest thou not that good, to be good, must be free from necessity(c)? 16 Thus the sun and the other planets are strengthened by the precepts of God so that they cannot do otherwise, wherefore they shall have no merit ( [5] ). 17 Tell me,

b David said in psalms that if man be content with what he acquires lawfully with his hand, it shall be well for them and the dominion ( carefulness of God) shall be made easy for them.

c The best thing is that which comes of free choice, and what is not of free choice cannot be good. Inde.

ويحرم من الطيبات العالمية ليعمل أعمالا صالحة 8 وعليه فإن الله يمهل الإنسان ليتوب (ا) ( [6] ) 9 الحق أقول لكم إن إلهنا قضى على الإنسان بالعمل للغرض الذي قاله أيوب ( [7] ) خليل الله ونبيه : " كما أن الطير مولودة للطيران والسمك للسباحة هكذا الإنسان مولود للعمل " 10 وهكذا يقول أيضا داود ( [8] ) أبونا نبي الله : " لأننا إذا أكلنا تعب أيدينا نبارك ويكون خير (ب) لنا " 11 لذلك يجب على كل أحد أن يعمل بحسب صفته ( [9] )12 ألا فقولوا لي إذا كان أبونا داود وابنه سليمان اشتغلا بأياديهما فماذا يجب على الخاطئ أن يفعل ؟ 13 فقال يوحنا : يعلم أن العمل شيء حسن ولكن يجب على الفقراء أن يقوموا به 14 فأجاب يسوع : نعم لأنهم لا يقدرون أن يفعلوا غير ذلك 15 ولكن ألا تعلم أنه يجب على الصالح ليكون صالحا أن يكون مجردا عن الضرورة (ج) 16 فالشمس والسيارات الأخرى تتقوى بأوامر الله حتى أنها لا تقدر أن تفعل غير ذلك فليس لهن فضل ( [10] ) 17 قولوا لي

ب قال داود في الزبور ان قنع الانسان ما كسب يبده ( بيده ) حلالا يكون خيرا لهم ويسر ( يسَّر ) لهم الولاية منه

ج خير شئ ما يكون بالاختيار وما كان بلا اختيار لا يكون خيرا منه
