1 ‘It behoveth a man to live in the city, even as the soldier liveth when he hath enemies around the fortress, defending himself against every assault and always fearing treachery on the part of the citizens. 2 Even so, I say, let him repell every outward enticement of sin, and fear the sense, because it hath a supreme desire for things impure.3 but how shall he defend himself if he bridle not the eye, which is the origin of every carnal sin? (b) As God liveth (c) in whose presence my soul standeth, he who hath not bodily eyes is secure not to receive punishment save only to the third degree, while he that hath eyes receiveth it to the seventh degree.
5 (d) ‘In the time of the prophet Elijah it came to pass that Elijah seeing a blind man weeping, a man of good life, 6 asked him, saying: “Why weepest thou, O brother?” 7 The blind man answered: “I weep because I cannot see Elijah the prophet, the holy one of God.”

1 يجب على الإنسان أن يعيش في المدينة كما يعيش الجندي إذا كان حوله أعداء يحيطون بالحصن دافعا عن نفسه كل هجوم خائفا على الدوام خيانة الأهلين 2 أقول هكذا يجب عليه أن يدفع كل إغراء خارجي من الخطيئة وأن يخشى الحس لأن له شغفا مفرطا بالأشياء المدنسة 3 ولكن كيف يدافع عن نفسه إذا لم يكبح جماح العين التي هي أصل كل خطيئة (ب) جسدية 4 لعمر الله (ج) الذي تقف نفسي في حضرته أن من ليست له عينان جسديتان يأمن من العقاب إلا ما كان إلى الدركة الثالثة على أن من عينان يحل به القصاص حتى الدركة السابعة 5 حدث في زمن النبي إيليا (د) أن إيليا رأى رجل ضريرا حسن السيرة يبكي 6 فسأله قائلا : " لماذا تبكي أيها الأخ " ؟ 7 أجاب الضرير : "ابكي لأني لا أقدر أن أبصر إيليا النبي قدوس الله "
