In sooth, we have understood, and we are beside ourselves at the knowledge that here on earth there are very few that are not idolaters.’
1 Then said Jesus: “Ye speak the truth, for now was Israel desirous to establish the idolatry that they have in their hearts, in holding me for God; 2 many of whom have now despised my teaching, saying that I could make myself lord of all Judaea, if I confessed myself to be God, 3 and that I am mad to wish to live in poverty among desert places, and not abide continually among princes in delicate living. 4 Oh hapless man, that prizest the light that is common to flies and ants and despisest the light that is common only to angels and prophets and holy friends of God ( [1] )!
5 If, then, the eye shall not be guarded, O Andrew, I tell thee that it is impossible not to fall headlong into lust (b). 6 Wherefore Jeremiah ([2] )the prophet, weeping vehemently, said truly: “Mine eye is a

حقا لقد فهمنا وإننا لحيارى من العلم بأنه لا يوجد هنا على الأرض إلا قليلون من الذين لا يعبدون الأصنام .
1 فقال حينئذ يسوع : إنكم تقولون الحق لأن إسرائيل كان الآن راغبا في إقامة عبادة الأصنام في قلوبهم إذ حسبوني إلها 2 وكثيرون منهم قد احتقروا الآن تعليمي قائلين أنه يمكنني أن أجعل نفسي سيد اليهودية كلها إذا اعترفت بأنني إله 3 وأني مجنون إذ رضيت أن أعيش في الفاقة في أنحاء البرية دون أن أقيم على الدوام بين الرؤساء في عيش رغيد 4 ما أتعسك أيها الإنسان الذي تحترم النور الذي يشترك فيه الذباب والنمل وتحتقر النور الذي تشترك فيه الملائكة والأنبياء وأخلاء الله الأطهار خاصة ( [3] ) 5 فإذا لم تحفظ العين يا اندراوس فإني أقول لك أن عدم الإنغماس في الشهوة (ب) حينئذ من المحال 6 لذلك قال أرميا ( [4] ) النبي باكيا بشدة : ( عين
