thief that robbeth my soul.” 7 For therefore did David our father pray with greatest longing to God our Lord (a) that he would turn away his eyes in order that he might not behold vanity ( [1] ). 8 For truly everything which hath an end is vain ( [2] ). 9 Tell me, then if one had two pence to buy bread, would he spend it to buy smoke? 10 Assuredly not, seeing that smoke doth hurt to the eyes and giveth no sustenance to the body. 11 Even so then let man do for with the outward sight of his eyes and the inward sight of his mind he should seek to know God his creator (b) and the good-pleasure of his will ( [3] ), and should not make the creature his end, which causeth him to lose the creator.

1 For verily every time that a man beholdeth a thing and forgetteth God who hath made it for man, he hath sinned. 2 For if a friend of thine should give thee somewhat to keep in memory of him, and thou shouldest sell it and forget thy friend,

لص يسرق نفسي ) 7 ولذلك صلى داود أبونا بأعظم شوق لله أبينا ( ربنا )(ا) أن يحول عينيه لكي لا يرى الباطل ( [4] ) 8 لأن كل ما له نهاية إنما هو باطل ( [5] ) قطعا 9 قل لي إذاً إذا كان لأحد فلسان يشتري بهما خبزا أ فيصرفهما مشتريا دخانا ( [6] )؟ 10 لا البتة لأن الدخان يضر العينين ولا يقيت الجسم 11 فعلى الإنسان أن يفعل هكذا لأنه يجب عليه ببصر عينيه الخارجي وبصر عقله الداخلي أن يطلب ليعرف الله خالقه (ب) ومرضاة مشيئته ( [7] ) وأن لا يجعل غرضه المخلوق الذي يجعله يخسر الخالق .

الفصل التاسع عشر بعد المائة ( ج)

1 لأنه حقا كلما نظر الإنسان شيئا ونسي الله الذي خلقه للإنسان فقد أخطأ 2 إذ لو وهبك صديق شيئا لتحفظه ذكرى له فبعته ونسيت صديقك
