6 But if our God hath in abomination them that jest and talk vainly, who will he hold them that murmur and slander their neighbour, and in what plight will they be who deal with sinning as with a business supremely necessary ( [1] )? 7 Oh impure world, I cannot conceive how grievously thou wilt be punished by God! (a) 8 He then who would do penance, he I say, must give out his words at the price of gold.’
9 His disciples answered: ‘Now who will buy a man’s words at the price of gold? 10 Assuredly, no one. 11 And how shall he do penance? It is certain that he will become covetous!’
12 Jesus answered: ‘Ye have your heart so heavy that I am not able to lift it up. 13 Hence in every word it is necessary that I should tell you the meaning. 14 But give thanks to God, who hath given you (b) grace to know the mysteries of God ( [2] ). 15 I do not say that the penitent should sell his talking, but I say that when he talketh he should think that he is casting forth gold. 16 For indeed, so doing, even as gold is spent on necessary things, so he will talk [only] when

a O wickedness of the world, I cannot know how great God will punish you. Inde.

6 ولكن إذا كان يمقت إلهنا المازحين والمتكلمين بالباطل فكيف يعتبر الذين يتذمرون ويغتابون جيرانهم وفي أي ورطة يكون الذين يتخذون ارتكاب الخطايا ضربا من التجارة على غاية الضرورة ( [3] ) ؟ 7 أيها العالم الدنس لا أقدر أن أتصور بأي صرامة يقتص منك الله (ا) 8 فعلى من يجاهد نفسه أن يعطي كلامه بثمن الذهب 9 أجاب تلاميذه : ولكن من يشتري كلام امرئ بثمن الذهب ؟ 10 لا أحد قط 11 وكيف يجاهد نفسه ؟ من المؤكد أنه يصير طماعا ؟ 12 أجاب يسوع : إن قلبكم ثقيل جدا حتى إني لا أقدر على رفعه 13 لذلك لزم أن أفيدكم معنى كل كلمة 14 ولكن اشكروا الله الذي وهبكم (ب) نعمة لتعرفوا أسرار الله ( [4] ) 15 لا أقول أن على التائب أن يبيع كلامه بل أقول أنه متى تكلم وجَب عليه أن يحسب أنه يلفظ ذهبا 16 حقا إنه إذا فعل ذلك فإنه يتكلم متى
