1 As for avarice, that must be changed into almsgiving. 2 Verily I say unto you that even as the plummet hath for its end the centre, so the avaricious hath hell for his end(b), 3 for it is impossible for the avaricious to possess any good in paradise. 4 Know ye wherefore? 5 For I will tell you. 6 As God liveth(c), in whose presence my soul standeth, the avaricious, even though he be silent with his tongue, by his works saith: “There is no other God than I.” 7 Inasmuch as all that he hath he is fain to spend at his own pleasure ( [1] ), not regarding his beginning or his end, that he is born naked, and dying leaveth all ( [2] ).
8 Now tell me; if Herod should give you a garden to keep, and ye were fain to bear yourselves as owners, not sending any fruit to Herod, and when Herod sent for fruit ye drove away his messengers, tell me, would ye be making yourselves kings over that garden? 9 Assuredly yea. 10 Now I tell you that even so the avaricious man maketh himself god over his riches which God hath given him.
11 Avarice is a thirst of the sense, which having lost God through sin because it

الفصل الثاني والعشرون بعد المائة (ا)
1 أما البخل فيجب تحويله إلى تصدق 2 الحق أقول لكم أنه كما أن غاية الشاقول ( [3] ) المركز كذلك الجحيم غاية البخيل (ب) 3 لأنه من المحال أن ينال البخيل خيرا في الجنة 4 أتعلمون لماذا ؟ 5 إني مخبركم 6 لعمر الله (ج) الذي تقف نفسي في حضرته أن البخيل وإن كان لسانه صامتا ليقول بأعماله : " لا إله غيري " 7 لأنه يصرف كل ماله على ملذته الخاصة ( [4] ) غير ناظر إلى بدايته أو نهايته فإنه ولد عريا ومتى مات ترك كل شيء ( [5] ) 8 ألا فقولوا لي إذا أعطاكم هيرودس بستانا لتحفظوه وأحببتم أن تتصرفوا فيه كأنكم أصحاب الملك فلا ترسلون ثمرا منه لهيرودس ومتى أرسل هيرودس يطلب ثمرا طردتم رسله قولوا لي ألا تكونون بذلك قد جعلتم أنفسكم ملوكا على البستان ؟ 9 بلى البتة 10 فأقول لكم أنه هكذا يجعل البخيل نفسه إلها على الثروة التي وهبها إياه الله 11 البخل هو عطش الحس الذي لما فقد الله بالخطيئة لأنه
