liveth by pleasure, and being unable to delight it-self in God, who is hidden from it, surroundeth itself with temporal things which it holdeth as its good; 12 and it groweth the stronger the more ( [1] )it seeth itself deprived of God.
13 And so the conversion of the sinner is from God (a)(b), who giveth the grace to repent. As said our father David ( [2] ): “This change cometh from the right hand of God (c).”
14 It is necessary that I should tell you of what sort man is, if ye would know how penitence ought to be done. 15 And so to-day let us render thanks to God, who hath given us the grace to communicate His will by my word ( [3] ).’
16 Whereupon he lifted up his hands and prayed, saying: ‘Lord God (d) almighty and merciful, who in mercy hath created us, giving us the rank of men, thy servants, with the faith of thy true messenger (e), 17 we thank thee for all thy benefits 18 and would fain adore thee only all the days of our life (f), 19 bewailing our sins, 20 praying and giving alms, 21 fasting ( [4] ) and studying thy word, 22 instructing

a God guides to repentance.
b There is no power except with God. Inde.
c God guides whomsoever he pleases. Inde.
d God is Sovereign, Omnipotent, the Gracious, God gives penitence.
e Thy prophet.
f God is worshiped.
يعيش بالملذة ولما لم يعد قادرا على الابتهاج بالله المحتجب عنه أحاط نفسه بالأشياء العالمية التي يحسبها خيره 12 وكلما رأى نفسه محروما من الله ازداد قوة ( [5] ) 13 وهكذا فإن تجدد الخاطئ إنما هو من الله (ا)(ب) الذي ينعم عليه فيقول كما قال أبونا داود ( [6] ) هذا التغير يأتي من يمين الله (ج) 14 ومن الضروري أن أفيدكم من أي نوع هو الإنسان إذا كنتم تريدون أن تعلموا كيف يجب فعل التوبة 15 ولنشكر اليوم الله الذي وهبنا نعمة لأبلغ إرادته بكلمتي ( [7] ) 16 ثم رفع يديه وصلى قائلا : أيها الرب (د) الإله القدير الرحيم الذي خلقتنا نحن عبيدك برحمة ومنحتنا مرتبة البشر ودين رسولك الحقيقي (هـ) 17 إننا نشكرك على كل إنعاماتك 18 ونود أن نعبدك وحدك كل أياما حياتنا (و)19 نادبين خطايانا 20 مصلين ومتصدقين 21 صائمين ( [8] ) ومطالعين كلمتك 22 مثقفين
