delight, not being curbed by reason followeth the light which the eyes show it; 11 whence, the eye not being able to see aught but vanity it deceiveth itself, and so, choosing earthly things, sinneth.
12 Thus it is necessary that by the mercy of God man’s reason be enlightened afresh, to know good from evil and [to distinguish] the true delight (a)(b): 13 knowing which, the sinner is converted to penitence. 14 wherefore I say unto you verily, that if God our Lord (c) enlighten not the heart of man ( [1] ), the reasonings of men are of no avail.’
15 John answered: ‘Then to what end serveth the speech of men?’
16 Jesus replied: ‘Man as man availeth naught to convert man to penitence; 17 but man as a means which God useth converteth man ( [2] ); 18 so that seeing God worketh by a secret fashion in man for man’s salvation (d), one ought to listen to every man, in order that among all may be received him in whom God speaketh ( [3] ) to us.’
19 James answered: ‘O Master, if perchance there shall come

المسرة غير مكبوحة الجماح بالعقل اتبع النور الذي تظهره له العينان 11 ولما كانت العينان لا تبصران شيئا غير الباطل خدع نفسه واختار الأشياء فأخطأ 12 لذلك وجب برحمة الله أن ينور عقل الإنسان من جديد ليعرف الخير من الشر والمسرة (ا) الحقيقية (ب) 13 فمتى عرف الخاطئ ذلك تحول إلى التوبة 14 لذلك أقول لكم حقا إنه إذا لم ينور الله ربنا (ج) قلب الإنسان ( [4] ) فإن تعقل البشر لا يجدي 15 أجاب يوحنا : إذا ما هي الجدوى من كلام الإنسان ؟ 16 فأجاب يسوع : الإنسان من حيث هو إنسان لا يفلح في تحويل إنسان إلى التوبة 17 أما الإنسان من حيث هو وسيلة يستعملها الله فهو يجدد الإنسان ( [5] ) 18 ولما كان الله يعمل في الإنسان بطريقة خفية (د)لخلاص البشر وجب على المرء أن يصغي لكل إنسان حتى يقبل من بين الجميع ذلك الذي يكلمنا به الله ( [6] )19 أجاب يعقوب : يا معلم لو فرضنا أن أتى
