that extol themselves, for they shall be humbled to the burning coals of hell. 10 Tell me, brethren, what is the cause for self-exaltation? 11 Is there, perchance, any good here upon earth? 12 No assuredly, for as saith Solomon ( [1] ), the prophet of God: “ Everything that is under the sun is vanity.” But if the things of the world do not give us cause to extol ourselves in heart, much less doth our life give us cause; 14 for it is burdened with many miseries, since all the creatures inferior to man fight against us. 15 O, how many have been slain by the burning heat of summer; 16 how many have been slain by the frost and cold of winter; 17 how many have been slain by lightning and by hail; 18 how many have been drowned in the sea by the fury of winds; 19 how many have died of pestilence, of famine, or because they have been devoured of wild beasts, bitten of serpents, choked by food! 20 O hapless man, who extolleth himself having so much to weigh him down, being laid wait for by all the creatures in every place! ( [2] ) 21 But what shall I say of the flesh and the sense that desire
للمتغطرسين لأنهم سيذلون في جمرات الجحيم 10 قولوا لي أيها الأخوة ما هو سبب الغطرسة ؟ 11 أيتفق أن يوجد صلاح على الأرض 12 لا البتة لأنه كما يقول سليمان ( [3] ) نبي الله : " إن كل ما تحت الشمس لباطل " 13 ولكن إذا كانت أشياء العالم لا تسوغ لنا الغطرسة بقلبنا فبالأحرى ألا تسوغه حياتنا 14 لأنها مثقلة بشقاء كثير لأن كل الحيوانات التي هي دون الإنسان تقاتلنا 15 ما أكثر الذين قتلهم حر الصيف المحرق ! 16 ما أكثر الذين قتلهم الصقيع وبرد الشتاء ! 17 ما أكثر الذين قتلتهم الصواعق والبرد ! 18 ما أكثر الذين غرقوا في البحر بعصف الرياح ! 19 ما أكثر الذين ماتوا من الوباء والجوع أو لأن الوحوش قد افترستهم أو نهشتهم الأفاعي أو خنقهم الطعام ! 20 ما أتعس الإنسان المتغطرس إذ أنه يرزح تحت أحمال ثقيلة وتقف له في كل موضع جميع الخلائق بالمرصاد ( [4] )21 ولكن ماذا أقول عن الجسد والحس اللذين لا يطلبان
