being created by God out of earth forgetteth his condition and would fain make God at his own pleasure( [1] )! 6 Wherein he silently mocketh God as though he should say: “There is no use in serving God.” For so do their works show. 7 To this did Satan desire to deduce you, O brethren, in making you believe me to be God; 8 because, I not being able to create a fly ( [2] ), and being passible ( [3] ) and mortal ( [4] ), I can give you nothing of use ( [5] ), seeing that I myself have need of everything ( [6] ). 9 How, then, could I help you in all things, as it is proper to God to do?

10 ‘Shall we, then, who have for our God the great God who hath created the universe with his word (a), mock at the Gentiles and their gods ( [7] )?

11 There were two men who came up here into the temple to pray ( [8] ): the one was a Pharisee and the other a publican. 12 The Pharisee drew nigh to the sanctuary, and praying with his face uplifted said: “I give thee thanks, O Lord my God (b), because I am not as other men, sinners, who do every wickedness, 13 and particularly

ينسى حاله ويود أن يصنع إلها بحسب هواه ( [9] ) مع أن الله خلقه من تراب 6 وهو بذلك يستهزئ بالله بهدوء كأنه يقول :" لا فائدة من عبادة الله " لأن هذه ما تظهره أعمالهم 7 إلى هذا أراد الشيطان أن يوصلكم أيها الأخوة إذ حملكم على التصديق بأنني أنا الله 8 فإني وأنا لا طاقة لي أن أخلق ذبابة ( [10] ) بل إني زائل ( [11] ) وفانٍ ( [12] ) ولا أقدر أن أعطيكم شيئا ( [13] ) نافعا لأني أنا نفسي في حاجة إلى كل شئ ( [14] ) 9 فكيف أقدر أن أعينكم على كل شئ كما هو شأن الله أن يفعل 10 أ فنستهزأ إذا وإلهنا هو الإله العظيم (ا) الذي خلق بكلمته الكون بالأمم وآلهتهم ( [15] ) ؟ 11 صعد رجلان إلى الهيكل هنا ليصليا ( [16] )أحدهما فريسي والآخر عشار 12 فاقترب الفريسي من المقدس وصلى رافعا وجهه قائلا : " أشكرك أيها الرب إلهي (ب) أنني لست كباقي الناس الخطاة الذين يرتكبون كل إثم 13 ولا مثل
