‘I have eaten bread in Herod’s house. 4 For before I knew thee I went to fish, and used to sell the fish to the family of Herod. 5 Whereupon, one day when he was feasting, I having brought thither a fine fish, he made me stay and eat there.’
6 Then said Jesus: ‘Now how didst thou eat bread with infidels? God pardon thee, O John! 7 But tell me, how didst thou bear thyself at the board? 8 Didst thou seek to have most honourable place? 9 Didst thou ask for the most delicate food? 10 Didst thou speak when thou wast not questioned at the table? Didst thou account thyself more worthy than the others to sit at table?’
11 John answered: ‘As God liveth, I did not dare to lift up my eyes, seeing myself, a poor fisherman, ill-clad, sitting among the king’s barons. 12 Whereupon, when the king gave me a little piece of flesh, methought that the world had fallen upon my head, for the greatness of the favour that the king did unto me. 13 And verily I say that, if the king had been of our law, I

إني أكلت خبزا في بيت هيرودس 4 لأني قبل أن عرفتك كنت أذهب لصيد السمك وأبيعه لبيت هيرودس 5 فجئتهم يوما إلى هناك وهو في وليمة بسمكة نفيسة فأمرني بأن أبقى وآكل هناك فقال 6 حينئذ يسوع : كيف أكلت خبزا مع الكفار ؟ ليغفر لك الله (ا) يا يوحنا 7 ولكن قل لي كيف تصرفت على المائدة ؟ 8 أ طلبت أن يكون لك المحل الأرفع 9 أ طلبت أشهى الطعام ؟ 10 أ تكلمت على المائدة وأنت لم تسال؟ أ حسبت نفسك أكثر أهلية للجلوس إلى المائدة من الآخرين ؟ 11 أجاب يوحنا : لعمر الله (ب) إني لم أجسر أن أرفع عيني لأني صياد سمك فقير ومرتد ثيابا رثة جالس مع حاشية الملك 12 فكنت متى ناولني الملك قطعة صغيرة أخال العالم هبط على رأسي لعظم المنة التي أحسن بها الملك إلى 13 والحق أقول أنه لو كان الملك من شريعتنا
