2 Jesus answered: ‘O Peter, it is a great thing that thou hast asked, nevertheless, if God please, I will answer thee. 3 Know ye, therefore, that hell is one, yet hath seven centres one below another ( [1] ). 4 Hence, even as sin is of seven kinds, for as seven gates of hell hath Satan generated it: so are there seven punishments therein.

5 For the proud, that is the loftiest in heart, shall be plunged into the lowest center ( [2] ), passing through all the centres above it, and suffering in them all pains that are therein (a). 6 And as here he seeketh to be higher than God ( [3] ), in wishing to do after his own manner, contrary to that which god commandeth, and wishing to recognize anyone above him: even so there shall he be put under the feet of Satan and his devils, 7 who shall trample him down as the grapes are trampled when wine is made, and he shall be ever derided and scorned of devils.

لكي يهرب الإنسان من الخطيئة؟ 2 أجاب يسوع : يا بطرس قد سألت عن شئ عظيم ومع ذلك فإني إن شاء الله مجيبك 3 فاعلموا إذا أن الجحيم هي واحدة ومع ذلك فإن له سبع دركات الواحدة منها دون الأخرى ( [4] )4 فكما أن للخطيئة سبعة أنواع إذ أنشأها الشيطان نظير سبعة أبواب للجحيم كذلك يوجد فيها سبعة أنواع من العذاب 5 لأن المتكبر أي الأشد ترفعا في قلبه سيزج في أسفل دركة ( [5] ) مارا في سائر الدركات التي فوقه وكابدا فيها جميع الآلام الموجودة فيها (ا) 6 وكما أنه يطلب هنا أن يكون أعظم من الله ( [6] ) لأنه يريد أن يفعل ما يعنُّ له مما يخالف ما أمر به الله ولا يعترف بأن أحدا فوقه فهكذا يوضع تحت أقدام الشيطان وشياطينه 7 فيدوسونه كما يداس العنب عند صنع الخمر وسيكون أضحوكة وسخرية للشياطين 8 والحسود

[1] The verse Nisa’: 145 clarifies that hell has several depths one below the other, the lowest is the most tormenting. We find in Al-Hijr 15: 44, that hell has seven doors; but Quran does not show differentiation of torment with the differentiation of sins, it may be understood from An-Naml 27: 90 "Do ye receive a reward other than that which ye have earned by your deeds?" and like it Yasin 36:54, As-Saffat 37: 39, At-Tur 52: 16, At-Tahrim 66: 7, that punishment is from the sort of sins. [4] تبين الآية 145 من سورة النساء أن الجحيم ذو دركات بعضها أسفل بعض، أسفلها أشدها عذابا. و نجد في سورة الحجر : 44 أن لجهنم سبع أبواب ، لكن لم يبين القرآن الكريم تنوع العذاب بتنوع الخطايا ، ولكن قد يفهم هذا من قوله تعالى " هل تجزون إلا ما كنتم تعملون" (النمل : 90 ، ونحوها يس : 54 ، الصافات : 39 ، الطور : 16 ، التحريم : 7 ) أن العقاب من جنس العمل . انظر أيضا فصل 59 وفصل 60 .
