claws are those of gryphons, whose nails are razors, the nature of whose generative organs is fire. 23 Now with these shall all the lustful enjoy the infernal embers which shall be their bed.
24 ‘To the third centre (a) shall go down the slothful who will not work now. 25 Here are built cities and immense palaces, 26 which as soon as they are finished must needs be pulled down straightway, because a single stone is not placed aright. 27 And these enormous stones are laid upon the shoulders of the slothful, who hath not his hands free to cool his body as he walketh and to ease the burden, 28 seeing that sloth hath taken away the power of his arms, 29 and his legs are fettered with infernal serpents.
30 ‘And what is worse, behind him are the demons, who push him, and make him fall to earth many times beneath the weight; 31 nor doth any help him to lift it up: 32 may, it being too much to lift, a double amount is laid upon him.
33 ‘To the second centre (b) shall go down the gluttonous. 34 Now here there is dearth of food, to such a degree

كمخالب العقبان وأظافرهن أمواس وطبيعة أعضائهن التناسلية نار 23 فمع هؤلاء يتمتع الشهوانيون على جمر الجحيم الذي سيكون سريرا لهم 24 ويهبط إلى الدركة الثالثة (ا) الكسلان الذي لا يشتغل الآن 25 هنا تشاد مدن وصروح فخيمة 26 ولا تكاد تنجز حتى تهدم توا لأنه ليس فيها حجر موضوع في محله 27 فتوضع هذه الحجارة الضخمة على كتفي الكسلان الذي لا يكون مطلق اليدين فيبرد جسده وهو ماش ويخفف الحمل 28 لأن الكسل قد أزال قوة ذراعيه 29 وساقاه مكبلتان بأفاعي الجحيم 30 وأنكى من ذلك أن وراءه الشياطين تدفعه وترمي به الأرض مرات متعددة وهو تحت العبء 31 ولا يساعده أحد في رفعه 32 بل لما كان أثقل من أن يرفع يوضع عليه مقدار مضاعف 33 ويهبط إلى الدركة الثانية (ب) النهم 34 فيكون هناك قحط إلى حد
