ابتدأ هذا الاسم على سبيل الاستهزاء بالصالحين12 لأن الكنعانيين كانوا منغمسين في عبادة الأصنام التي هي عبادة أيدي بشرية 13 وعليه كان الكنعانيون عندما يرون أحدا ممن كان منفصلا من شعبنا عن العالم ليخدم الله قالوا سخرية فريسي (ا) أي" يطلب الله " 14 كأنهم يقولون أيها المجنون ليس لك تماثيل من أصنام فانك تعبد الريح فانظر إلى عقباك واعبد آلهتنا 15 فقال يسوع : الحق أقول لكم أن كل قديسي الله وأنبيائه كانوا فريسيين لا بالاسم مثلكم بل بالفعل نفسه 16 لأنهم في كل أعمالهم طلبوا الله خالقهم (ب) وهجروا مدنهم و مقتنياتهم حبا في الله فباعوها وأعطوها للفقراء حبا في الله .
