7 The younger replied: “O brother it is now two months since I have drunk water. Let us go, therefore, and see what God saith by his prophet David: 8 the Lord is able (a) to give us water.”
9 ‘Whereupon they returned to the dwelling of the elder, at the door whereof they found a spring of fresh water.
10 Said the elder: “O brother thou art an holy one of God; for thy sake hath God given (b) this spring.
11 The younger answered: “O brother, in humility sayest thou this 12 but certain it is that if God had done this for my sake he would have made a spring close to my dwelling, that I should not depart [in search thereof]. 13 For I confess to thee that I sinned against thee. When thou saidst that for two days that thou didst not drink thou soughtest water: 14 and I had been for two months without drinking, whereupon I felt an exaltation within me, as though I were better than thou.”
15 Then said the elder: “O brother, thou saidst the truth therefore thou didst not sin.”
16 Said the younger: “O brother thou hast forgotten what our father Elijah said, that he who seeketh God ought to condemn himself alone. 17 Assuredly he wrote it not that we might know it, but rather that we might observe it.”

على قليل من الماء " 7 قال الأصغر :" أيها الأخ منذ شهرين لم أشرب ماء فلنذهب إذا ونرى ماذا يقول الله على لسان نبيه داود 8 إن الله لقادر (ا) على أن يعطينا ماء " 9 فعادوا من ثم إلى مسكن الأكبر فوجدوا على بابه ينبوعا من ماء عذب 10 قال الأكبر :" إنك أيها الأخ قدوس الله لأنه من أجلك قد أعطي (ب) هذا الينبوع 11 أجاب الأصغر :" إنك أيها الأخ تقول هذا تواضعا 12 ولكن لو فعل الله هذا من أجلي لكان صنع ينبوعا قريبا من مسكني حتى لا أنصرف ( للتفتيش عليه ) 13 فإني أعترف لك بأني أخطأت إليك لما قلت إنك منذ يومين لم تشرب وكنت تفتش على الماء 14 أما أنا فإني بقيت شهرين دون شرب ولذلك شعرت بإعجاب فيَّ كأني أفضل منك " 15 فقال الأكبر إنك قلت الصحيح ولذلك لم تخطئ " 16 قال الأصغر :" إنك قد نسيت أيها الأخ ما قال أبونا إيليا إن من يطلب الله يجب أن يحكم على نفسه فقط 17 ومن المؤكد أنه قال هذا لا لنعرفه بل لنعمل به " 18 وبعد أن لاحظ الأكبر سنا
