1 ‘The elder answered: “O brother, say not so, for thou desipsest knowledge, which our God willeth to be prized.’
2 The younger replied: “Now, how shall I speak now so as not to fall into sin: 3 for thy word is true, and mine also. 4 I say, then that they who know the commandments of God written in the law ought to observe those [first] if they would afterwards learn more. 5 And all that a man learneth, let it be to observe it, and not [merely] to know it.”
6 ‘Said the elder: “O brother tell me, with whom hast thou spoken, that thou knowest thou hast not learned all that I said?”
7 ‘The younger answered: “O brother, I speak with myself. 8 Every day I place my self before the judgements of God (b) to give account of myself. 9 And ever do I feel within myself one that excuseth my faults.”
10 Said the elder: “O brother, what faults hast thou, who art perfect?”
11 ‘The younger answered: “O brother, say not so, for that

1 أجاب الأكبر :" لا تقل هكذا أيها الأخ لأنك إنما تحتقر المعرفة التي يريد الله أن تعتبر " 2 أجاب الأصغر :" فكيف أتكلم إذا حتى لا أقع في الخطيئة 3 لأن كلمتك صادقة وكلمتي أيضا 4 أقول إذا إن من يعرف وصايا الله المكتوبة في الشريعة يجب عليه العمل بهذه أولا إذا أحب أن يتعلم بعد ذلك أكثر 5 وليكن كل ما يتعلمه الإنسان للعمل لا ( لمجرد ) العلم به " 6 أجاب الأكبر :" قل لي أيها الأخ مع من تكلمت لتعلم أنك لم تتعلم كل ما قلته ؟" 7 أجاب الأصغر :" إني أتكلم أيها الأخ مع نفسي 8 إني أضع كل يوم نفسي أمام دينونة الله (ب) لأعطي حسابا عن نفسي 9 وأشعر على الدوام في داخلي بمن يوبخ ( يجعل عذرا لـ ) ذنوبي " 10 قال الأكبر :" ما هي ذنوبك أيها الأخ الذي هو كامل ؟" 11 أجاب الأصغر :" لا تقل هذا لأني
