for every one that considereth his poverty with his penitence perceiveth that in this world we ought not to shut up our heart.

18 ‘But he that maketh the oil rancid, corrupteth the book, putrefieth the salt, extinguisheth the light _ this man is a false Pharisee ( [1] ). 19 If, therefore, ye would not perish, beware that ye do not as do the Pharisees today (a).

1 Jesus having come to Jerusalem, and having entered one sabbath day into the Temple, the soldiers drew nigh to tempt him and take him, 2 and they said: ‘Master, is it lawful to wage war?’

3 Jesus answered: ‘Our faith telleth us ( [2] ) that our life is a continual warfare upon the earth.’

4 Said the soldiers: ‘So wouldst thou fain convert us to thy faith and wouldst that we should forsake the multitude of gods (for Rome alone hath twenty eight thousand gods that are seen) and should follow thy God who is one only 5 and for that he cannot be seen, it is not known where

لأن كل من يتأمل فقره مع توبته يرى أنه لا يجب علينا في هذا العالم أن نغلق قلوبنا 18 ولكن من يجعل الزيت زنخا ويفسد الكتاب ويجعل الملح منتنا ويطفأ النور فهذا الرجل فريسي كاذب ( [3] ) 19 فإذا كنتم لا تريدون أن تهلكوا فاحذروا أن تفعلوا كما يفعل الفريسيون اليوم (ا) .

1 فلما جاء يسوع إلى أورشليم ودخل الهيكل يوم سبت اقترب الجنود ليجربوه ويأخذوه 2 وقالوا : يا معلم أ يجوز اصلاء الحرب؟ 3 أجاب يسوع : إن ديننا يخبرنا ( [4] ) أن حياتنا حرب عوان على الأرض 4 قال الجنود : أ فتريد إذا أن تحولنا إلى دينك أو تريد أن نترك جم الآلهة ( فإن لرومية وحدها ثمانية وعشرين ألف إله منظور ) وأن نتبع إلهك الأحد 5 ولما كان لا يرى فهو لا يعلم أين
