that he who is elect cannot become reprobate, 3 and he who is reprobate cannot by any means become elect ( [1] ); 4 and that, even as God hath predestined well-doing as the road whereby the elect shall walk unto salvation, even so hath he predestined sin as the road by which the reprobate shall walk unto damnation. 5 Cursed be the tongue that said this, with the hand that wrote it, for this is the faith of Satan. 6 Wherefore one may know of what manner are the Pharisees of the present day, for they are faithful servants of Satan.

7 (a) What can predestination mean but an absolute will to give an end to a thing whereof one hath the means in hand? 8 For without the means one cannot destine an end. 9 How, then, shall he destine the house who not only lacketh stone and money to spend, but hath not even so much land as to place one foot upon? 10 Assuredly none[could do so]. 11 No more, then, I tell you, is predestination, taking away the free will that God hath given to man of his pure bounty (b), the law of God. Of a surety it is not

لا يمكن معها لمن كان مختارا أن يصير منبوذا 3 ومن كان منبوذا لا يتسنى له بأية وسيلة كانت أن يصير مختارا ( [2] ) 4 وأنه كما أن الله قدّر أن يكون عمل الصلاح هو الصراط الذي يسير فيه المختارون إلى الخلاص هكذا قدّر أن تكون الخطيئة هي الطريق الذي يسير فيه المنبوذون إلى الهلاك 5 لعن اللسان الذي نطق بهذا واليد التي سطرته لأن هذا إنما هو اعتقاد الشيطان 6 فيمكن للمرء على هذا أن يعرف شاكلة فريسيي هذا العصر لأنهم خدمة الشيطان الأمناء 7 فماذا (ا) يمكن أن يكون معنى سبق اصطفاء سوى أنه إرادة مطلقة تجعل للشيء غاية وسيلة الوصول إليها في يد المرء 8 فإنه بدون وسيلة لا يمكن لأحد تعيين غاية 9 فكيف يتسنى لأحد تقدير بناء بيت وهو لا يعوزه الحجر والنقود ليصرفها فقط بل يعوزه موطئ القدم من الأرض 10 لا أحد البتة 11 فسبق الاصطفاء لا يكون شريعة الله بالأولى إذا استلزم سلب حرية الإرادة التي وهبها الله للإنسان بمحض جوده (ب) فمن المؤكد أننا نكون إذ ذاك
