1 The good scribe wept as he said this, as the sailor weepeth when he seeth his ship broken up.
And he said: ‘Hosea, when he went to serve God was prince over the tribe of Naphtali, and aged fourteen years. 2 And so, having sold his patrimony and given it to the poor, he went to be disciple of Haggai.
3 Hosea was so inflamed with charity that concerning all that was asked of him he would say: “This hath God given (b) me for thee, O brother; accept it therefore!”
4 ‘For which cause he was soon left with two garments only, namely, a tunic of sackcloth and a mantle of skins. 5 He sold, I say, his patrimony and gave it to the poor, because otherwise no one would be suffered to be called a Pharisee.
6 ‘Hosea had the book of Moses, which he read with greatest earnestness. 7 Now one day Haggai said to him: “Hosea, who hath taken away from thee all that thou hadst?”
8 He answered: “The book of Moses.”
9 ‘It happened that a disciple of a neighbouring prophet was fain to go to Jerusalem,

الفصل السابع والثمانون بعد المئة (ا)
1 ولما قال الكاتب الصالح هذا بكى كما يبكي النوتي إذا رأى سفينته قد تحطمت وقال : كان هوشع لما ذهب ليخدم الله أميرا لسبط نفتالي وكان له من العمر أربع عشرة سنة 2 وبعد أن باع ارثه ووهبه الفقراء ذهب ليكون تلميذا لحجي 3 وكان هوشع مشغوفا بالصدقة حتى أنه كلما طلب منه شئ يقول : " أيها الأخ إن الله منحني (ب) هذا لك فاقبله " 4 فلم يبق له لهذا السبب سوى ثوبين فقط أي صدرة من مسح ورداء من جلد 5 وكان قد باع كما قلت ارثه وأعطاه للفقراء لأنه بدون هذا لا يجوز لأحد أن يسمى فريسيا 6 وكان عند هوشع كتاب موسى وكان يطالعه برغبة شديدة 7 فقال له حجي يوما ما : " من أخذ منك كل مالك ؟ " 8 أجاب : " كتاب موسى " 9 وحدث أن تلميذ أحد الأنبياء المجاورين أحب أن يذهب إلى أورشليم
