1 The scribes and Pharisees took counsel with the high priest to slay Lazarus ( [1] ); 2 for many renounced their traditions and believed in the word of Jesus, because the miracle of Lazarus was a great one seeing that Lazarus had conversation with men, and ate and drank. 3 But because he was powerful, having a following in Jerusalem, and possessing with his sisters Magdala and Bethany, they knew not what to do ( [2] ).

4 Jesus entered into Bethany, into the house of Lazarus, and Martha, with Mary, ministered unto him.

5 Mary, sitting one day at the feet of Jesus ( [3] ), was listening to his words, 6 whereupon Martha said to Jesus: ‘Lord, seest thou not that my sister taketh no care for thee, and provideth not that which thou must eat and thy disciples?’

7 Jesus answered: ‘Martha, Martha, do thou take thought for that which thou shouldst do; for Mary hath chosen a part which shall not be taken away from her for ever.’

8 Jesus sitting at table with a great multitude that believed in him 9 spake saying: ‘Brethren, I have but little time to remain with you for

1 فتشاور الكتبة والفريسيون مع رئيس الكهنة ليقتلوا لعازر ( [4] ) 2 لأن كثيرين رفضوا تقاليدهم وآمنوا بكلمة يسوع لأن آية لعازر كانت عظيمة إذ أن لعازر حدَّث الشعب وأكل وشرب 3 ولكن لما كان قويا وله أتباع في أورشليم وممتلكا مع أختيه المجدل وبيت عنيا لم يعرفوا ماذا يفعلون ( [5] ) 4 ودخل يسوع بيت لعازر في بيت عنيا فخدمته مرثا ومريم 5 وكانت مريم ذات يوم جالسة عند قدمي يسوع ( [6] ) مصغية إلى كلامه 6 فقالت مرثا ليسوع : ألا ترى يا سيد أن أختي لا تهتم بك ولا تحضر ما يجب أن تأكله أنت وتلاميذك ؟ 7 أجاب يسوع: مرثا مرثا تبصري في ما يجب أن تفعلي لأن مريم قد اختارت نصيبا لن ينزع منها إلى الأبد 8 وجلس يسوع على المائدة مع جم غفير من الذين آمنوا به 9 وتكلم قائلا : أيها الاخوة لم يبق لي معكم سوى هنيهة من الزمن لأنه
