to do to others that which we desire for ourselves, and not do to others that which we do not desire to receive ( [1] ).’
15 Then said John: ‘O master, why hath not God granted this to men, that they should die once and return as Lazarus hath done, in order that they might learn to know themselves and their creator?’
1 Jesus answered: ‘Tell me, John there was an householder who gave a perfect axe to one of his servants in order that he might cut down the wood which obstructed the view of his house.
2 But the labourer forgot the axe, and said: “If the master would give me an old axe I should easily cut down the wood.”
3 Tell me, John, what said the master? 4 Assuredly he was wroth, and took the old axe and struck him on the head, saying: “Fool and knave! I gave thee an axe wherewith thou mightest cut down the wood without toil, 5 and seekest thou this axe wherwith one must work with great toil, and all that is cut is wasted and good for nought? 6 I desire thee to
أن نعامل الآخرين بما نرغب فيه لأنفسنا وأن لا نعمل للآخرين ما لا نود وصوله إلينا ( [2] ) 15 حينئذ قال يوحنا : يا معلم لماذا لم ينعم الله على الناس بأن يموتوا مرة ثم يرجعوا كما فعل لعازر ليتعلموا أن يعرفوا أنفسهم وخالقهم ؟
الفصل السابع والتسعون بعد المئة
1 أجاب يسوع : ما قولك يا يوحنا في رب بيت أعطى أحد خدمه فأسا صحيحة ليقطع غابة حجبت منظر بيته 2 ولكن الفاعل نسي الفأس وقال : " لو أعطاني السيد فأسا قديمة لقطعت الغابة بسهولة " 3 قل لي يا يوحنا ماذا قال السيد ؟ 4 حقا إنه حنق وأخذ الفأس القديمة وضربه على الرأس قائلا : " أيها الغبي الخبيث لقد أعطيتك فأسا تقطع بها الغابة بدون كد 5 أ فتطلب الآن هذه الفأس التي يضطر معها المرء إلى كد عظيم وكل ما يقطع ( بها ) يذهب سدى ولا ينفع لشيء ؟ 6 إني أريد أن
