1 God is so rich in mercy (b)( [1] ) that albeit the water of thousand seas if so many were to be found, could not quench a spark of the flames of hell, yet a single tear of one who mourneth at having offended God quencheth the whole of hell, by the great mercy wherewith God succoureth him(c)( [2] ). 2 God therefore, to confound Satan and to display his own bounty, willeth to call merit in the presence of his mercy every good work of his faithful servant ( [3] ), 3 and willeth him so to speak of his neighbour ( [4] ). 4 But of himself a man must beware of saying: “I have merit”; for he would be condemned.’

1 Jesus then turned to Lazarus, and said: ‘Brother, I must needs for a short time abide in the world, 2 wherefore when I shall be near to thine house I will not ever go elsewhere, because

1 إن الله لغني برحمته ( [5] ) حتى أن دمعة واحدة ممن ينوح لإغضابه الله تطفأ الجحيم كله بالرحمة العظيمة التي يمده (ب) الله بها على أن مياه ألف بحر ـ لو وجدت ـ لا تكفي لإطفاء شرارة من لهب الجحيم ( [6] ) 2 فلذلك يريد الله خذلا للشيطان وإظهارا لجوده (ج) هو أن يحسب في حضرة رحمته كل عمل صالح أجرا لعبده المخلص ( [7] ) 3 ويحب منه أن يقول عن قريبه هكذا ( [8] ) 4 أما الإنسان في خاصة نفسه فعليه أن يحذر من قوله " لي أجر " لأنه يدان .

الفصل المئتان

1 حينئذ التفت يسوع إلى لعازر وقال : يجب عليَّ أيها الأخ أن أمكث في العالم هنيهة 2 فمتى كنت على مقربة من بيتك لا أذهب إلى محل آخر قط لأنك
