1 When the confusion in the temple ceased by the departure of Jesus, the high priest ascended on high, 2 and having beckoned for silence with his hands he said: ‘Brethren, what do we? 3 See ye not that he hath deceived the whole world ( [1] ) with his diabolical art? 4 Now how did he vanish, if he be not a magician? 5 Assuredly, if he were an holy one and a prophet, he would not blaspheme against God and against Moses [his] servant, and against the Messiah, who is the hope of Israel. 6 And what shall I say? 7 He hath blasphemed all our priesthood, 8 wherefore verily I say unto you, if he be not removed from the world Israel will be polluted, and our God will give us to the nations ( [2] ). 9 Behold now, how by reason of him this holy temple hath been polluted.’

10 And in such wise did the high priest speak that many forsook Jesus, 11 wherefore the secret persecution was converted into an open one, 12 insomuch that the high priest went in person to Herod, and to the

1 ولما هدأ الاضطراب في الهيكل بانصراف يسوع صعد رئيس الكهنة 2 وبعد أن أومأ بيديه للصمت قال: ماذا نفعل أيها الاخوة ؟ ألا ترون أنه قد أضل العالم ( [3] ) كله بعمله الشيطاني؟ 4 فإذا لم يكن ساحرا فكيف اختفى الآن 5 فحقا إنه لو كان طاهرا ونبيا لما جدّف على الله وعلى موسى خادمه وعلى مسيا الذي هو أمل إسرائيل 6 وماذا أقول ؟ 7 فلقد جدَّف على طُغمة كهنتنا برمتها 8 فالحق أقول لكم أنه إذا لم يزل من العالم تدنس إسرائيل ودفعنا الله إلى الأمم ( [4] ) 9 انظروا الآن كيف قد تدنس هذا الهيكل المقدس بسببه 10 وتكلم رئيس الكهنة بطريقة أعرض لأجلها كثيرون عن يسوع 11 فتحول بذلك الاضطهاد السري إلى اضطهاد علني 12 حتى أن رئيس الكهنة ذهب بنفسه إلى هيرودس وإلى
