Roman governor, accusing Jesus that he desired to make himself king of Israel, 13 and of this they had false witnesses.
14 Thereupon was held a general council against Jesus, forasmuch as the decree of the Roman made them afraid. 15 For so it was that twice the Roman senate had sent a decree concerning Jesus:
16 In one decree it was forbidden on pain of death, that any one should call Jesus of Nasareth, the prophet of the Jews, either God or son of God; 17 in the other it forbade under capital sentence, that any one should contend concerning Jesus of Nazareth, prophet of the Jews. 18 Wherefore, for this cause, there was great division among them. 19 Some desired that they should write again to Rome against Jesus; 20 others said that they should leave Jesus alone, regardless of what he said, as of a fool; 21 others adduced the great miracles that he wrought.
22 The high priest therefore spake that under pain of anathema none should speak a word in defence of Jesus; and he spake to Herode, and the governor, saying: ‘ In any case we have an ill venture in our hands,
الوالي الروماني متهما يسوع بأنه رغب في أن يجعل نفسه ملكا على إسرائيل 13 وكان عندهم على هذا شهود زور 14 فالتأم من ثم مجلس عام ضد يسوع لأن أمر الرومانيين أخافهم 15 ذلك أن مجلس الشيوخ الروماني أرسل أمرين بشأن يسوع 16 يتوعد أحدهما بالموت من يدعو يسوع الناصري نبي اليهود الله 17 ويتوعد في الآخر بالموت من يشاغب في شأن يسوع الناصري نبي اليهود 18 فلهذا السبب وقع الشقاق فيما بينهم 19 فرغب بعضهم في أن يعودوا فيكتبوا إلى رومية يشكون يسوع 20 وقال آخرون أنه يجب أن يتركوا يسوع وشأنه غاضين النظر عما يقول كأنه معتوه 21 وأورد آخرون الآيات العظيمة التي فعلها 22 فأمر رئيس الكهنة بأن لا يتفوه أحد بكلمة دفاع عن يسوع إلا كان تحت طائلة الحرم 23 ثم كلم هيرودس والوالي قائلا : كيفما كانت الحال فإن بين أيدينا معضلة
