24 for if we slay this sinner we have acted contrary to the decree of Caesar, 25 and, if we suffer him to live and he make himself king, how will the matter go?’ 26 Then Herode arose and threatened the governor, saying: ‘ Beware lest through thy favouring of that man this country be rebellious: 27 for I will accuse thee before Caesar as a rebel.’ 28 Then the governor feared the Senate and made friends with Herod ( [1] )(for before this they had hated one another unto death), 29 and they Joined together for the death of Jesus, and said to the high priest: ‘Whenever thou shalt know where the malefactor is, send to us, for we will give thee soldiers.’ 30 This was done to fulfil the prophecy of David who foretold of Jesus, prophet of Israel, saying: ( [2] )‘ The princes and kings of the earth are united against the holy one of Israel, because he announceth the salvation of the world.’
31 Thereupon on that day, there was a general search for Jesus throughout Jerusalem.
24 لأننا إذا قتلنا هذا الخاطئ خالفنا أمر قيصر 25 وإن تركناه حيا وجعل نفسه ملكا فكيف يكون المآل؟ 26 فوقف حينئذ هيرودس وهدد الوالي قائلا : إحذر من أن يكون عطفك على ذلك الرجل باعثا على ثورة هذه البلاد 27 لأني أتهمك بالعصيان أمام قيصر 28 حينئذ خاف الوالي مجلس الشيوخ وصالح هيرودس ( [3] ) وكانا قبل هذا قد أبغض أحدهما الآخر إلى الموت 29 واتحدا معا على إماتة يسوع وقالا لرئيس الكهنة : متى علمت أين الأثيم فأرسل إلينا نعطك جنودا 30 وقد عمل هذا لتتم نبوءة داود الذي أنبأ بيسوع نبي إسرائيل قائلا ( [4] ) " اتحد أمراء الأرض وملوكها على قدوس إسرائيل لأنه نادى بخلاص العالم" 31 وعليه فقد حدث تفتيش عام في ذلك اليوم على يسوع في أورشليم كلها.
