the soldiers scourged him so grievously that his body rained blood. 69 Thereupon, in mockery they clad him in an old purple garment, saying: ‘It is fitting to our new king to clothe him and crown him’: 70 so they gathered thorns and made a crown ( [1] ), like those of gold and precious stones which kings wear on their heads. 71 And this crown of thorns they placed upon Judas’ head, 72 putting in his hand a reed for sceptre, and they made him sit in a high place. 73 And the soldiers came before him, bowing down in mockery, saluting him as King of the Jews. 74 And they held out their hands to receive gifts, such as new kings are accustomed to give; 75 and receiving nothing they smote Judas, saying: ‘Now how art thou crowned, foolish king, if thou wilt not pay thy soldiers and servants?’
76 The chief priests with the scribes and Pharisees, seeing that Judas died not by the scourged, and fearing lest Pilate should set him at liberty, made a gift of money to the governor, who
مع أن الجنود جلدوه بشدة سال معها جسمه دما 69 ولذلك ألبسوه ثوبا قديما من الأرجوان تهكما قائلين : يليق بملكنا الجديد أن يلبس حلة ويتوَّج 70 فجمعوا شوكا وصنعوا إكليلا ( [2] ) شبيها بأكاليل الذهب والحجارة الكريمة التي يضعها الملوك على رؤوسهم 71 ووضعوا إكليل الشوك على رأس يهوذا 72 ووضعوا في يده قصبة كصولجان وأجلسوه في مكان عال 73 ومر من أمامه الجنود حانين رؤوسهم تهكما مؤدين له السلام كأنه ملك اليهود 74 وبسطوا أيديهم لينالوا الهبات التي اعتاد إعطاءها الملوك الجدد 75 فلما لم ينالوا شيئا ضربوا يهوذا قائلين : كيف تكون إذا متوجا أيها الملك إذا كنت لا تهب الجنود والخدم ؟ 76 فلما رأى رؤساء الكهنة مع الكتبة والفريسين أن يهوذا لم يمت من الجلد ولما كانوا يخافون أن يطلق بيلاطس سراحه أعطوا هبة من النقود للوالي
