53 And being without life how give they life? 54 It is certain, father, that these are not God.”
55 The old man was wroth at these words, saying: “if thou wert of age to understand I would break thy head with this axe: 56 but hold thy peace, because thou hast not understanding!”
57 Abraham answered: father, if the gods help to make man, how can it be that man should make the gods? 58 And if the gods are made of wood, it is a great sin t burn wood.. 59 But tell me, father how is it that when thou hast made so many gods, the gods have not helped thee to make so many other children that thou shouldest become the most powerful man in the world?”
60 The father was beside himself, hearing his son speak so; 61 the son went on: 62 “father, was the world for some time without men?
“yes” answered the old man, “and why?”
63 “Because” said Abraham “I should like to know who made the first God.”
64 “Now go out of my house!” Said the old man, “and leave me to make this god quickly, and speak no words to me, 65 for, when, thou art hungry thou desirest bread and not words.”
66 Said Abraham: “A fine god, truly , that thou cuttest him as thou wilt, and he defendeth not himself!”
67 Then the old man was angry, and said “all the world saith that it is a God, and thou ,mad fellow, sayest that it is not. 68 By my gods, if thou wert a man I could kill thee!”
53 ولما لم تكن لهم حياة فكيف يعطون إذا الحياة ؟ 54 فمن المؤكد يا أبي أن هؤلاء ليسوا هم الله ؟ ( [1] ) 55 فحنق الشيخ لهذا الكلام قائلا :" لو كنت بالغا من العمر ما تتمكن معه من الإدراك لشججت رأسك بهذه الفأس 56 اصمت إذ ليس لك إدراك ( [2] ) " 57 أجاب إبراهيم :" يا أبي إن كانت الآلهة تساعد على صنع الإنسان فكيف يتأتى للإنسان أن يصنع آلهة ؟ ( [3] ) 58 وإذا كانت الآلهة مصنوعة من خشب فإن إحراق الخشب خطيئة كبرى 59 ولكن قل لي يا أبت كيف وأنت قد صنعت آلهة هذا عديدها لم تساعدك الآلهة لتصنع أولادا كثيرين فتصير أقوى رجل في العالم ؟" 60 فحنق الأب لما سمع ابنه يتكلم هكذا 61 فأكمل الابن قائلا: 62 " يا أبت هل وجد العالم حينا من الدهر بدون بشر؟" أجاب الشيخ :" نعم ولماذا ؟" 63 قال إبراهيم :" لأني أحب أن أعرف من صنع الإله الأول " 64 فقال الشيخ :" انصرف الآن من بيتي ودعني اصنع هذا الإله سريعا ولا تكلمني كلاما 65 فمتى كنت جائعا فإنك تشتهي خبزا لا كلاما " 66 فقال إبراهيم :" إنه لإله عظيم فإنك تقطعه كما تريد وهو لا يدافع عن نفسه ( [4] ) 67 فغضب الشيخ وقال :" إن العالم بأسره يقول أنه إله وأنت أيها الغلام تقول كلا ؟ 68 فوآلهتي لو كنت رجلا لقتلتك .
