he did not find one who feared God in that city (a)’ the which was so wicked that God, having called Jonah the prophet to send him to that city, 5 he would fain for fear of the people have fled to Tarsus, 6 wherefore God caused him to be cast into the sea, 7 and received by a fish and cast up nigh to Nineveh. 8 And he preaching there, that people was converted to repentance, 9 so that God had mercy on them( [1] ).
10 Woe unto them that call for vengeance; for on themselves it shall come, 11 seeing that every man hath in himself cause for the vengeance of God (b) ( [2] ). 12 now tell me, have ye created this city with this people? O madmen that ye are, 13 assuredly no. 14 For all creatures united together could not create a single new fly from nothing, and this it is to create (c) ( [3] ). 15 If the blessed God who hath created this city now sustaineth it, why desire ye to destroy it? 16 Why didst thou not Say: “may it please thee, master, that we pray to the lord our God (d) that this people may be converted to penitence?” assuredly this is the proper act of a disciple of mine,

لم يجد أحدا يخاف الله في تلك (ا) المدينة التي بلغ من شرها أن دعا الله يونان النبي ليرسله إلي تلك المدينة 5 فحاول الهرب إلى طرسوس خوفا من الشعب 6 فطرحه الله في البحر 7 فابتلعه سمكة وقذفته على مقربة من نينوى فلما بشّر هناك تحول الشعب إلى التوبة 9 فرأف الله بهم ( [4] ) 10 ويل للذين يطلبون النقمة لأنها إنما تحل بهم 11 لأن كل إنسان يستحق نقمة (ب) الله ( [5] ) 12 ألا فقولوا لي هل خلقتم هذه المدينة مع هذا الشعب ؟ إنكم لمجانين ؟ 13 كلا ثم كلا 14 إذ لو اجتمعت الخلائق جميعها لما أتيح لها أن تخلق ذبابة واحدة جديدة من لا شئ وهذا هو المراد بالخلق (ج) ( [6] ) 15 فإذا كان الله المبارك الذي خلق هذه الدينة يعولها فلماذا تودون هلاكها 16 لماذا لم تقل : أ تريد يا معلم أن نضرع للرب إلهنا (د) أن يتوجه هذا الشعب للتوبة؟ 17 حقا إن هذا العمل الجدير بتلميذ لي
