having for guard the angels and for protection the living God(a)? 18 Nevertheless, it is necessary, as saith the prophet Solomon, ( [1] )that “ Thou my son that art come to fear the lord, prepare thy soul for temptations.” 19 Verily I say unto you, that a man ought to do as the banker who examineth money, examining his thoughts, that he sin not against God his creator (b).’

1 ‘There have been and are in the world men who hold not thought for sin; who are in the greatest error. 2 Tell me, how sinned Satan? 3 It is certain that he sinned in the thought that he was more worthy than man. 4 Solomon sinned in thinking to invite to a feast all the creatures of God, whereupon a fish corrected him by eating all that he had prepared. 5 Wherefore not without cause, saith David our father ( [2] ), that “to ascend in one’s Heart setteth one in the valley of tears.” 6 And wherefore doth God cry by Isaiah is prophet, saying:

إذا كانت الملائكة حراسة والله الحي (ا)حاميه ؟ 18 ومع ذلك فمن الضروري كما يقول النبي سليمان ( [3] )أن : " تستعد أنت يا بني الذي صرت تخاف الله للتجارب" 19 الحق أقول لكم أنه على الإنسان أن يحتذي مثال الصيرفي الذي يتحرى النقود ممتحنا أفكاره لكيلا يخطئ إلى خالقه (ب).
الفصل الرابع والسبعون (ج)
1 كان لا يزال في العالم قوم لا يبالون بالخطيئة وإنما هم لعلي أعظم ضلال 2 قولوا لي كيف أخطأ الشيطان ؟ 3 أنه أخطأ لمجرد الفكر بأنه أعظم شأنا من الإنسان 4 وأخطأ سليمان لأنه فكر في أن يدعو كل خلائق الله لوليمة فأصلحت خطأه سمكة إذ أكلت كل ما كان قد هيأه 5 لذلك لم يكن بلا باعث ما يقول داود ( [4] ) أبونا : " استعلاء الإنسان في نفسه يهبط به في وادي الدموع " 6 لذلك ينادي الله على لسان أشعيا نبيه قائلا:
