to drink because it desireth not to see it own ugly face( [1] ). 16 So doth the ungodly who worketh ill; 17 for he hateth the light lest his evil works should be known( [2] ). 18 But he who receiveth wisdom, and not only worketh not well, but, which is worse , employeth it for evil ( [3] ), is like to him who should use the gifts as instruments to slay the giver.’

1 Verily I say unto you, that God had not compassion on the fall of Satan, but yet [had compassion] on the fall of Adam (b). 2 And let this suffice you to know the unhappy condition of him who knoweth good and doeth evil.’
3 Then said Andrew: O master, it is a good thing to leave learning a side, so as not to fall into such condition.’
4 Jesus answered: ‘If the world is good without the sun, man without eyes, and the soul without understanding, then is it good not to know. 5 Verily I say unto you, that bread is not so good for the temporal life as is learning for the eternal life. 6 Know ye not that

لأنه لا يريد أن ينظر وجهه القبيح ( [4] ) 16 هكذا يفعل الغير صالح الذي يفعل الشر 17 لأنه يكره النور لئلا تعرف أعماله ( [5] ) 18 أما ومن يؤتي حكمة ولا يكتفي بأن لا يفعل حسنا بل يفعل شرا من ذلك بأن يستخدمها للشر ( [6] )فإنما يشبه من يستعمل الهبات أدوات لقتل الواهب.
الفصل الثامن والسبعون (ا)
1 الحق أقول لكم أن الله لم يشفق على سقوط الشيطان ومع ذلك فقد أشفق (ب) على سقوط آدم 2 وكفاكم أن تعرفوا سوء حال من يعرف الخير ويفعل الشر 3 فقال حينئذ أندراوس : يا معلم يحسن أن ينبذ العلم خوفا من السقوط في مثل هذه الحال 4 أجاب يسوع : إذا كان العالم حسنا بدون الشمس والإنسان بدون عينين والنفس بدون إدراك يكون عدم المعرفة إذا حسنا 5 الحق أقول لكم أن الخبز لا يفيد الحياة الزمنية كما يفيد العلم الحياة الأبدية 6 ألا تعلمون أن
