13 But the friend is a singular thing, that is not easily found, but is easily lost. 14 For the friend will not suffer contradiction against him whom he supremely loveth. 15 Beware, be ye cautious, and choose not for friend one who loveth not him whom ye love. 16 Know ye what friend meaneth? 17 Friend meaneth naught but physician of the soul. 18 And so just as one rarely findeth a good physician who knoweth the sicknesses and understandeth to apply the medicines thereto, so also are friends rare who know the faults and understand how to guide unto good. 19 But herein is an evil, that there are many who have friends that feign not to see the faults of their friend; 20 others excuse them; 21 others defend them under earthly pretext 22 and, what is worse, there are friends who invite and aid their friend to err, whose end shall be like unto their villany. 23 Beware that ye receive not such men for friends,

13 ولكن الصديق شيء خاص لا يسهل وجوده ولكن يسهل فقده 14 لأن الصديق لا يسمح باعتراض على من يحبه حبا شديدا 15 إحذروه وانتبهوا ولا تختاروا من لا يحب من تحبون صديقا 16 فاعلموا ما المراد بالصديق ؟ 17 لا يراد بالصديق إلا طبيب النفس 18 وهكذا كما إنه يندر أن يجد الإنسان طبيبا ماهرا يعرف الأمراض ويفقه استعمال الأدوية فيها هكذا يندر وجود أصدقاء يعرفون الهفوات ويعرفون كيف يرشدون للصلاح 19 ولكن هنالك شر وهو أن لكثيرين أصدقاء يغضون الطرف عن هفوات صديقهم 20 وآخرين يعذرونهم 21 وآخرين يحامون عنهم بوسيلة عالمية 22 ويوجد أصدقاء – وذلك شر مما تقدم – يدعون أصدقائهم ويعضدونهم في ارتكاب الخطأ وستكون أخرتهم نظير لؤمهم 23 احذروا من أن تتخذوا أمثال هؤلاء القوم أصدقاء
