1 ‘Let thy friend be such that, even as he willeth to correct thee, so he may receive correction; 2 and even as he willeth that thou shouldest leave all things for love of God, even so again it may content him that thou forsake him for the service of God.’
3 ‘But tell me, if a man know not how to love God how shall he know how to love himself; 4 and how shall he know how to love others, not knowing how to love himself? 5 Assuredly this is impossible. 6 Therefore when thou choose thee one for friend (for verily he is supremely poor who hath no friend at all). See that thou consider first, not his fine lineage, not his fine family, not his fine house, not his fine clothing, not is fine person, not yet his fine words for thou shalt be easily

الفصل السادس والثمانون (ا)
1ليكن صديقك صديقا يقبل الإصلاح كما يريد هو أن يصلحك 2 وكما أنه يريد أن تترك كل شئ حبا في الله فعليه بأن يرضي أن تتركه لأجل خدمة الله 3 ولكن قل لي إذا كان الإنسان لا يعرف كيف يحب الله فكيف يعرف كيف يحب نفسه ؟ 4 وكيف يعرف كيف يحب الآخرين إذا كان لا يعرف كيف يحب نفسه ؟ 5 حقا إن هذا لمحال 6 فمتى اخترت لك صديقا ـ لأن من لا صديق له مطلقا هو فقير جدا ـ فانظر أولا لا إلى نسبة الحسن ولا إلى أسرته الحسنة ولا إلى بيته الحسن ولا إلى ثيابه الحسنة ولا إلى شخصه الحسن ولا إلى كلامه الحسن أيضا لأنك (حينئذ)
