deceived. 7 But look how he feareth God, how he despiseth earthly things, how he loveth good works, and above he all how he hateth his own flesh, and so shalt thou easily find the true friend (a): 8 if he above all things shall fear God, and shall despise the vanities of the world; if he shall be always occupied in good works, and shall hate his own body as a cruel enemy. 9 Nor yet shalt thou love such a friend in such wise that thy love stay in him, for [so] shalt thou be an idolater ( [1] ). 10 But love him as a gift that God hath given thee (b), for so shall God adorn [him] with greater favour ( [2] ). 11 Verily I say unto you, that he who hath found a true friend hath found one of the delights of paradise; nay such is the key of paradise.’
12 Thaddaeus answered: ‘But if perchance a man shall have a friend who is not such as thou hast said, O master? What ought he to do? Ought he to forsake him?’

تغش بسهولة 7 بل انظر كيف يخاف الله وكيف يحتقر الأشياء الأرضية وكيف يحب الأعمال الصالحة وعلى نوع أخص كيف يبغض جسده فيسهل عليك (حينئذ) وجدان ( أن تجد ) الصديق الصادق (ا) 8 انظر على نوع أخص إذا كان يخاف الله ويحتقر أباطيل العالم وإذا كان دائما منهمكا بالأعمال الصالحة ويبغض جسده كعدو عات 9 ولا يجب عليك أيضا أن تحب صديقا كهذا بحيث أن حبك ينحصر فيه لأنك تكون عابد صنم ( [3] )10 بل أحبه كهبة وهبك الله إياها (ب) فيزينه الله بفضل أعظم ( [4] )11 الحق أقول لكم أن من وجد صديقا وجد إحدى مسرات الفردوس بل هو مفتاح الفردوس 12 أجاب تدايوس: ولكن إذا اتفق لإنسان وجود صديق لا ينطبق على ما قلت يا معلم فماذا يجب عليه أن يفعل ؟ أيجب عليه أن يهجره ؟
