condemneth shall be condemned( [1] ).’
17 Then said he who writeth this: ‘Woe unto princes! For they shall go to hell.’
18 Jesus reproved him, saying: ‘Thou art become foolish, O Barnabas ( [2] ) , in that thou hast spoken thus. 19 Verily I say unto thee, that the bath is not so necessary for the body, the bit for the horse, and the tiller for the ship, as the prince is necessary for the state. 20 And for what cause did God (a) give Moses, Joshua, Samuel, David, and Solomon, and so many others who passed judgement? 21 To such hath God given the sword for the extirpation of iniquity ( [3] ).’
22 Then said he who writeth this: ‘Now how ought judgement to be given, condemning and pardoning?’
23 Jesus answered: ‘Not every one is a judge; for to the judge alone it appertaineth to condemn others, O Barnabas. 24 And the judge ought to condemn the guilty, even as the father commandeth a putrified member to be cut off from his son, in order that the whole body may not become putrified.’

ومن يُدِن يُدَان ( [4] )17 حينئذ قال من يكتب بهذا : ويل للرؤساء لأنهم سيذهبون إلى الجحيم 18 فوبخه يسوع قائلا : لقد صرت غبيا يا برنابا ( [5] ) إذ تكلمت هكذا 19 الحق أقول لك أن الحمام ليس بضروري للجسم ولا اللجام للفرس ولا يد الدفة للسفينة كضرورة الرئيس للبلاد 20 ولأي سبب إذن (ا) قال الله لموسى ويسوع وصموئيل وداود وسليمان ولكثيرين آخرين أن يصدروا أحكاما 21 إنما أعطى الله السيف لمثل هؤلاء لاستئصال الإثم ( [6] ) 22 فقال حينئذ من يكتب هذا : كيف يجب إصدار الحكم بالقصاص والعفو ؟ 23 أجاب يسوع : ليس كل أحد قاضيا يا برنابا لأن للقاضي وحده أن يدين الآخرين 24 وعلى القاضي أن يقتص من المجرم كما يأمر الأب بقطع عضو فاسد من ابنه لكيلا يفسد الجسد كله .
