1 Said peter: ‘How long must I wait for my brother to repent?’
2 Jesus answered: ‘So long as thou wouldst be waited for.’
3 Peter answered: ‘Not every one will understand this; wherefore speak to us more plainly.’
4 Jesus answered: ‘Wait for thy brother as long as God waiteth for him (b).’
5 Neither will they understand this.’ Said Peter.
6 Jesus answered: ‘Wait for him so long as he hath time to repent.’
7 Then was peter sad, and the others also because they understood not the meaning. 8 Whereupon Jesus answered: ‘If ye had sound understanding, and knew that yr yourselves were sinners, ye would not think ever to cut off your heart from mercy to the sinner. 9 And so I tell you plainly, that the sinner ought to be waited for that he may repent, so long as he hath soul beneath his teeth to breathe. 10 For so doth our God wait for him, the mighty and merciful (c). 11 God (d) said not: ‘In that hour that the sinner shall fast, do alms, make prayer, and go on pilgrimage, I will forgive him.” 12 Wherefore this

الفصل التاسع والثمانون (ا)
1قال بطرس : كم يجب أن أمهل أخي ليتوب ؟ 2 أجاب يسوع : بقدر ما تريد أن تُمهل 3 أجاب بطرس : لا يفهم كل أحد هذا فكلمنا بوضوح أتم 4 فأجاب يسوع : أمهل أخاك ما أمهله الله (ب) 5 فقال بطرس : ولا يفهمون هذا أيضا 6 أجاب يسوع : أمهِله ما دام له وقت للتوبة 7 فحزن بطرس والباقون لأنهم لم يفقهوا المراد 8 عندئذ قال يسوع : لو كان عندكم إدراك صحيح وعرفتم إنكم أنتم أنفسكم خطاة لما خطر في بالكم مطلقا أن تنزعوا من قلوبكم الرحمة بالخاطئ 9 ولذلك أقول لكم صريحا أنه يجب أن يمهل الخاطئ ليتوب ما دام له نفس تتنفس من وراء أسنانه 10 لأنه هكذا يمهله إلهنا القدير الرحيم (ج) 11 إن الله (د) لم يقل : إني أغفر للخاطئ في الساعة التي يصوم ويتصدق ويصلي ويحج فيها 12وهو ما قام
