thou hast greatly sinned, O priest, in saying that thou hast said. 4 May it please God that there come not upon the holy city great vengeance for this sin.’
5 Then said the priest: ‘May God pardon us (a), and do thou pray for us.’
6 Then said the governor and Herod: ‘Sir, it is impossible that man should do that which thou doest; wherefore we understand not that which thou sayest.’
7 Jesus answered: ‘That which ye say is true, for God worketh good in man, even as Satan worketh evil. 8 For man is like a shop, wherein whoso entereth with his consent worketh and selleth therein. 9 But tell me, O governor, and thou O king, ye say this because ye are strangers to our law: for if ye read the testament and covenant of our God (b)( [1] ) ye would see that Moses with a rod made the water turn into blood, the dust into fleas, the dew into tempest, and the light into darkness. 10 He made the frogs and mice to come into Egypt, which covered the

إنك أيها الكاهن قد أخطأت خطيئة عظيمة بالقول الذي قلته 4 ليلطف الله (ا) بهذه المدينة المقدسة حتى لا تحل بها نقمة عظيمة لهذه الخطيئة 5 فقال حينئذ الكاهن : ليغفر لنا الله (ا) أما أنت فصل لأجلنا 6 ثم قال الوالي وهيرودس : يا سيد إنه لمن لمحال أن يفعل بشر ما أنت تفعله فلذلك لا نفقه ما تقول 7 أجاب يسوع : أن ما تقوله لصدق إن الله يفعل صلاحا بالإنسان كما أن الشيطان يفعل شرا 8 لأن الإنسان بمثابة حانوت من يدخله برضاه يشتغل ويبيع فيه 9 ولكن قل لي أيها الوالي وأنت أيها الملك أنتما تقولان هذا لأنكما أجنبيان عن شريعتنا لأنكما لو قرأتما العهد وميثاق إلهنا (ب) ( [2] ) لرأيتما أن موسى حول بعصاه البحر دما , الغبار براغيث , والندى زوبعة , والنور ظلاما 10 أرسل الضفادع والجرذان على مصر فغطت
